New programs from Tencent WeTech Academy and partners combine hands-on AI coding challenges for students with a dedicated AI literacy course for teachers
Tencent WeTech Academy and the Education Bureau of Hong Kong SAR launched “AI for All,” a new initiative developed with partners in Hong Kong to help students and teachers build practical AI literacy. The initiative brings together the 2026/27 Hong Kong Regional Competition of the Weixin Mini Program Global Innovation Challenge and a new AI literacy and application course for teachers, developed jointly by Tencent Cloud and Hong Kong Education City.
“Technology is a capability, and using it for good is a conscious choice,” said Leon Guo, Senior Vice President of Tencent. “We hope to leverage Tencent’s technological strengths and resources to help more young people understand, master, and make good use of AI. Beyond developing these skills, we hope they will use them to support communities and people in need, growing from learners of technology into creators of social value and putting ‘Tech for Good’ into practice.”
Learning AI by Doing
Through the Mini Program education platform equipped with tools including WorkBuddy, students can use AI-assisted coding tools to turn ideas into working projects, even with little or no prior programming experience. Through project-based learning, participants are encouraged to use technology to address real-world needs, from smarter schools and low-carbon living to social inclusion.
One example is Sound of Time, developed by students from Po Leung Kuk No. 1 W.H. Cheung College in Hong Kong. The team built an AI-powered tool to help people with hearing impairments practice speech. The project won first prize at the global challenge and a gold medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva and is now moving toward real-world use in special education settings.
Equipping Teachers to Apply AI in the Classroom
Tencent Cloud Training and Certification and Hong Kong Education City are introducing a new course to help educators understand AI fundamentals, explore generative AI, and apply the technology in practical teaching scenarios. The course also covers data security and responsible AI use.
Through the program, teachers will explore how AI can support lesson preparation, instructional design, and administrative tasks, while identifying where human judgment remains essential. This gives teachers more time to understand their students, inspire thinking, and focus on what matters most in education.
Building on Four Years of Youth Tech Education
Since the Mini Program education platform launched, students across more than 10 countries and regions have created more than 287,000 projects.
With “AI for All,” Tencent WeTech Academy and its partners aim to bring practical AI skills to more students and teachers across Hong Kong and empower the next generation talent to use technology for good.
